Girls on the Run

"Teamwork. Awesome. Running. Athletics. Fun."

These are just a few of the words, our Saint Joseph members of the Girls on the Run team use to describe this great program.

Girls on the Run Foundations

Founded by Molly Barker in 1995, Girls on the Run is a national, positive youth development program, which combines an interactive curriculum and running to inspire self-respect and healthy lifestyles in pre-teen girls. The core curriculum addresses many aspects of girls' development - their physical, emotional, mental and social well-being.

Girls on the Run at Saint Joseph

Mrs. MC Cox, Saint Joseph Girls on the Run coach and K5 teacher, has been working with the program for the past several years. She believes that one of the most important aspects of this program is that it helps girls address challenges, such as peer pressure and gossip, and gives them tools such as cooperation, teamwork and respect to combat these issues.

Goals of Girls on the Run

The program combines training for a 3.1 mile running event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts. The goals of the program are to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development. Each session of Girls on the Run includes a lesson of the day, a proper stretching and exercise/running program, and concludes with a nutritious snack.

Maybe we've got a future Wilma Rudolph or Florence Griffith Joyner roaming the halls of Saint Joseph Catholic School. Even if we do not, we are growing stronger, happier, more confident young ladies through this great program - Girls on the Run!
