The Physical Education program at Saint Joseph School is taught by Mrs. Karen Tucker. Mrs. Tucker is a certified Elementary Education teacher.
A primary goal of our PE program is to foster a life-long love of being physically active. While following state and nation Physical Education standards, our classes focus on fun and promoting an active lifestyle.
Each class is scheduled for PE once a week. Students are required to wear athletic shoes on PE days. They are also allowed to wear their Saint Joseph t-shirt on their PE day. We have a spacious gym where most of our classes take place. Sometimes we will plan to have class outdoors when the weather and schedule permits.
Physical Education classes at Saint Joseph focus on PLAY. The activities planned are designed to keep all of the students as active as possible during the class period. With at least three activities planned for each class period, there is very little down-time. Most of the activities the children play are designed to be non-competitive and cooperative in nature. All children bring different talents and abilities to the classroom, so it is important that each student can feel success and a sense of accomplishment in PE class. Lessons also emphasize some of the character traits Saint Joseph promotes such as sportsmanship, teamwork, cooperation, encouragement, kindness, responsibility, self-esteem, respect for others, and so much more!
We cover many units in PE each year, including cooperative games, soccer, football, basketball, movement exploration, paddle play, and MORE! Each unit includes age-appropriate activities that introduce, develop, and reinforce skills in our national and state physical education standards. The focus with the younger students is locomotor skills and basic sending and receiving skills. As the students develop these basic skills, we move to more advanced movement and manipulative skills. We play lead-up games to develop skills to play sports. The older students are also introduced to rules and regulations for various sports.
In addition, our PE program, in conjunction with a short jump rope unit, participates in a philanthropic program called Jump Rope for Heart. Jump Rope for Heart is a national fund-raising event created by the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Not only do the students learn about ways to fight heart disease and stroke, but they also have an opportunity to help others, including children. All of our classes participate. Our K4 classes may just dance around or jump over a stationary rope, but they, too, participate and achieve the same sense of accomplishment as the older students as a result of helping others.
Since we are concerned with the long-term health and well-being of our students, we have worked hard to create a quality PE program here at Saint Joseph. The students are encouraged make a habit to have a physically active lifestyle outside of school with their family and friends.
