The art program at Joseph School is instructed by our talented art teacher, Mr. Bob Bramhall. Students at Saint Joseph Catholic School are exposed to a variety of different artists and styles of artwork over the years of their education. Each year the students study approximately twenty artists and create their own artwork inspired by the artists that they study. Some of the favorite artists studied by the students are Pablo Picasso, Andy Goldsworthy, Alexander Calder, Claude Monet, Georges Seurat, and Andy Warhol.
Thanks to the art fees paid by parents in the beginning of the year, all materials are provided for the students. The students work with many different types of media. They make clay creations that are fired in our very own kiln. Jewelry making is a favorite clay activity. They use acrylic paints to study pointillism and many other styles of painting. Pastels, colored pencils, and charcoal are used to make many creative works of art. Students use ink to create fantastic ink-monsters as done by the artist Stefan G. Bucher.
Recycling materials to make art is one of Mr. Bramhall’s passions as an art teacher. The students are always amazed at what they can create from items that would otherwise be put in a landfill. Robots, fish, necklaces, and mosaics are just some of the wonderful artworks created mainly with trash. Mr. Bramhall has the privilege of meeting with each grade level 4K-6 once a week for approximately 30-45 minutes. He always encourages the students to continue to create outside of the classroom and he enjoys when they take pride in their artistry.
The Visual Arts curriculum for the Diocese of Charleston is available on the Diocesan website.
